For exterior, every concrete slab (like walkway or driveway) must be sorted in pieces. For that, we cut a line in every four to six feet and put "Expansion Joints Membrane" (a foam, recommended one inch dick, four to six inch wide) in every eight feet and all surrounding structures. Some say: "the usual spacing recommendation for joint in a non-reinforced slab is a separation of approximately 30 times the slab thickness. For example a 4” thick slab x 30 = 120” or a joint every 10’ 0”".[+]
What if we don't put "Expansion Joints"?
Basically, concrete has a desired expansion characteristic. If there is no membrane between the joints of driveway and a brick wall (for instance), the pressure of expanded slab may break the siding or itself. Expansion Joints foam roles as a flexible room to play.
How the problem can be solved?
we have to cut a line right beside the siding (four to six inches deep) and put the membrane in place; after, filling out the gapes with caulk. It brings the pressure of expansion down, up to 80%.
